Caregiver Burnout

I Thought I Could Do It All, Until I Couldn't

June 14, 20251 min read

Many adult children start caregiving slowly, checking in, helping with bills, and driving to appointments. But over time, “helping out” can silently become full-time. This is a story about how easily burnout sneaks in and how I finally reached out before things fell apart.

My dad needed help after his stroke, and I didn’t hesitate. I took over appointments, prescriptions, groceries, and insurance calls. I was proud to be the one he trusted. But I also had a full-time job, a teenager, and a body that started showing signs of fatigue I couldn’t ignore.

I snapped at my son over cereal. I missed a work deadline. I cried in the car after forgetting to refill one of Dad’s meds. The breaking point came when I got the flu and had no one to call to help me.

That night, in bed with chills, I finally admitted I needed backup.

Steps Forward:

  • I made a list of tasks that could be shared or delegated.

  • I called my sister, not to vent, but to ask for specific help.

  • We interviewed two home care agencies and scheduled regular support.

  • I started seeing a therapist once a month just to talk about myself.

Recommendations: Caregiver burnout doesn’t always look dramatic. It can be quiet, gradual, and persistent. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, let this be your nudge. Use our

Senior Care Starter Kit to identify support options and create a realistic care plan, one that includes you.
